Horse Racing Exhibition
Now that horse ownership has grown on TWiTCraft, we felt it would be a perfect time to hold a horse racing exhibition!
If you are interested in racing, meet at the TWiTPark Race Track located at x:500 z:50 at around 2pm PST on Saturday August 17th. TWiTPark has stables and open pens available to house your steed behind the racetrack.
We are currently accepting donations for prizes, if interested, contact Geo131313, AndrewMartian or I to donate.
Everybody is welcome to attend, there is plenty of free seating. Also available are 2 Skyboxes for purchase at 5,000 coins each/obo and 2 Field boxes available for 2,500 coins each/obo. Owners get a free horse stable and access to amenities including the Grass Growing Arena. Send me a message in game if you are interested in purchasing a box.
Hope to see you at the races!
Vantes

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who attended! This was a fun event and I'd like to hold more events like this in the future!

Any time picked is not going to suit someone, especially with all of the non-US players. So I'm happy vaunted has picked one and if I can make it (early Sunday morning) I will come along.

Henceforth, whenever one is affected by an action of Vantes it shall be known as "Vanted".
Usage:
"I'm so glad that griefer got vanted from the server! He was a real jerk!"
"I was eyeing that property over next to the Citadel, but it got vanted."

....hmmmm ... let me think about it for a sec .... Yes! This will now be used for all the things!
That race was very fun. Thank to all who participated and a special thanks to the event coordinator: Vantes. I must say the the exhibition was vanted very well.
Re: Horse Racing Exhibition
For the next race, I suggest it be some sort of Cannonball Run like from spawn to the Airfield.

Skyer! You sir, are a brilliant man. That is an amazing idea. I would love to enter a steed in that race.
Also I would love to donate a prize: a beacon with a full size iron pyramind. Useful for quickly digging out one's basement!

Re: Horse Racing Exhibition
Here's a few ideas regarding a Cannonball Run type race.
1. 4 destinations chosen ahead of time and grass betting determines the final destination for the race.
2. A finish line consisting of a wool block that needs to be broken (empty handed). The winner is the one which Log Block/Prism shows broke the block first. Of course, this is place in a location free of region protection.
3. Let people know the destination ahead of time so that new players who don't know their way around the server can plan their route. This way we might get more participation. We might also get those who sabotage the route with traps or road closures.
4. Instead of number 3, keep the final destination a secret 15 minutes prior to the start of the race. Possibly less participation.
5. Instead of number 3 or 4 above, each participant gets assigned their own piece of wool at the start and finish line. The one who wins is who Log Block/Prism says took the least amount of time to break both pieces of wool. This way racers can participate over the course of a few days to compensate for all our global time zone differences. I personally like this choice. But there needs to be an honor system here to ensure players actually used a horse rather than the nether road to get to the finish. Perhaps the finish line needs to be on a 2 block high plinth that can only be reached by horse. Adequate region protection around the finish would need to be made to prevent breaking the plinth and climbing in or derp towering from above.

Re: Horse Racing Exhibition
1. At the start of the race, give the players the coordinates for the first destination. At the first destination, a sign for the coordinates of the second destination and so on. It tests a player's knowledge of the terrain around the map - Will you take the "shortest distance route" across an ocean or will you take a longer route to avoid certain builds/obstacles?
2. Easier method: Two unlocked chests with wool blocks - One at the beginning and one at the end. LB will tell us who accessed the chest. "What if a lamer takes all the wool to sabotage the other players, Rich Uncle Poster?" Easy: Put something into the chest. Doesn't matter what, as long as it creates a LB entry. That said, why not just have a chest with the winning item in it unlocked and the first person to get it is the winner?
3. Noooooooooooope! Make the prize something so valuable they would be foolish NOT to participate and the newer players will do so. Something like 10 diamond blocks or multiple stacks of gold/golden carrots. Yes, it will prevent prefab obstacles.
4. Noooooooooooope! No announcement regarding the final destination. Use multiple points to lead the players to the final destination without telling them at the beginning.
5. Eh... It sucks that some players are on at different times than others, but I still think it'd be easier to just have the prize in the chest waiting for the first person to find it. If you make enough obstacles at the checkpoints to where death is definitely possible (think skydiving/parkour/combination locks/etc. that could easily get you killed) I think that you'd offset some of the time delay by simply killing off competitors and forcing them to start over. Just because you're using a horse to get there doesn't mean you can't ever get off of it to clear an obstacle.

It would be trivial to lock the chest so only the participants can access it. Or make a region that does the same.

Yeah but the problem with registering participants is that a lot of players ignore the forum even when they're asked outright to check it out.

Personally, I dont like the idea of an event being over a few days. There is an energy to events that have a bunch of participants in heated "in the moment" competition that is a lot of fun. Wool would be fine. But a region would also be fine. There does need to be rules set up though like "everyone needs their personal icon in dynamap on during the entire race" so that we can have a race admin watching the map and making sure people dont disappear and then reappear from it (netherroads). I can easily imagine an enterprising player getting several crappy horses that look identical, also with identical names and hiding them throughout the map, only to "start" on a horse then park it, hop off, netherroad somewhere, grab a hidden horse, and finish the race first & fast. There needs to be someone watching the map/player movement during the entire race.
Re: Horse Racing Exhibition
Ok. Here's a new checklist of bullet points. Let's see if we can keep it simple for the first race. Once we work out the flaws in the plan, the second race and so forth will improve with what we learned.
I've never seen the movie (don't flame me) but I believe this is how it went down.
1. One start point. One finish line. No mid-race checkpoints. I know multiple checkpoints and riddle solving sounds cool too but let's get people addicted to participation before they get put off by the harder races.
2. The start and finish points are known ahead of time to allow both long time players and new players to plan their route. We need to pick places where there are multiple ways to get there so players can weigh their options. I suggest the Resource world portal to ThorFromNorth's Gear/TWiT logo island.
3. Route sabotage is strictly against the rules. Also, no last minute builds to get past obstacles either such as new roads, bridges, tunnels, etc. Let's try the honor system first before having to police the community.
4. A chest at the finish line determines the winner according to Log Block/Prism recording of any kind of deposit. Put the horses saddle in there if you forget to bring something else. I still think it should be on a 2-3 block high plinth so that the racer and horse must jump up to finish.
5. The horse's "UID" according to the stables plugin, must be registered prior to the race so it can be checked at the finish line.
6. All racers must remain visible in dynmap.
Everyone races at once. Let's make an effort to come up with an event time good for HGLCraft, TSC and PA if at all possible plus anyone else interested, of course. This may be the biggest stumbling block.
Advertise the living daylights out of the event. Nothing at spam level frequency but players should spread the word in game.
We need referees. If the time of the event is right, I'd be willing to step out of the race and be a ref if no one objects. Depending on the number of racers, there will likely be a need for more eyes on the map. A ref should maybe watch 2 to 3 racers.

I hope I find out about the next race..it would be so tempting to put on my horse race announcer voice and actually capture the whole event...
