Is the skytram used?

Postby Timberwolf1777 » 09 Aug 2013, 04:47

I have been logged in regularly for the past week and even with the large number of players online, I have noticed that the usage of the buy and sell cart signs is minimal these days. Does anyone still rely on the skytram network for transit? Or has the netherroad and DoT Rail finally become the mainstays of near leoville transportation?

Looking at the map, the long while track lines seem ... out of place. As I have no vested interest in expanding/monitoring an unused rail system, I have been considering removing most of it. If I am simply unaware of its continued importance, or anyone has a huge desire to see the rail system stay put, please let me know asap.

Thanks!

I still use it from time to time, though if you had to take it away i could just use the netherroad.

I've seen people use the skytram lately. Mostly, I see them traveling to Hyrule (suprkid) or the Airfield (Mandy_02, aro15 and a few others). The North Leoville station is right above my house so I'd love for that to stay. The 3 Sky5 lines might be dead. I know the Sky5 stop to the east isn't used. Even though I have a house next to that one, too, my netherroad stop is faster. I've never seen anyone use the stop at vantes ranch or bladelands. Bladedk hasn't been on in a long time I think. Thornton probably uses his netherroad more but he can comment on his skytram stop and glass pyramid stops.

By the way, the spiraling track above the glass pyramid can be opened since the fall damage bug was fixed a few months ago.

Any chance I can get an island in Heaven?

One of these nights when the pop is low I can run a dynmap update. It goes through ever known chunk and cleans it up. They say they optimized it to not harm server tps but back in the day it used to just bring minecraft to a standstill. Don't know you'll we try! YOLO.

Before anything in Heaven gets dealth with, I'll need some mod help. Also when it was moved, its placement got a little off so I need to spend a few days moving the gates and deconstructing and the rebuilding an island or two. In addition, until I recover my finances in game, Im ignoring that build.

After I get the help I need and all the stuff redone, of course I awould be happy to welcome your home into heaven ... after I get a tour of a mythological, fantasy, or ancient historical build of yours and approve it. ;)

Lets put any future Heaven related stuff in a new thread I'll make for it today or tomorrow and leave this thread devoted to addressing the skytram.

Thanks for the input!

No, I mainly use the Netherroad to get around, I don't even use the rail around Leoville very much anymore.

Addressing rail destinations: I already have below ground tracks made (currently closed or rarely used) that provide service to sky5, and the north leoville area. I could easily activate these lines and reverse the lift sign to take you to an underground station that would still provide service to sky5, north leoville, and hyrule (via a connection to the DoT line that goes there.) That way I would be able to remove the skytram tracks without too much inconvenience to others.

Just spitballing some more ideas here....

If I may contribute my point of view as a relatively new player. I find the Netherroad and overground rail services more sufficient than the Skytram. I tried it a few times during my first days and my points boil down to:

  • The nearest spawn entry point seems to be the citadel; this is too far and complicated (need to go down stairs + lift up) than the netherroad (portal in SGS) or rail (building next to spawn).
  • The journeys are not very scenic; the system is too high up and some users may not be on "Far" rendering distance to fully appreciate the journey.
  • The system design itself is too basic and even haphazard; players are more at risk of fall death if something goes wrong (e.g. accidental cart eject, dealing with stray mobs/hazards/griefing) and lack of embellishments or "stable" looking design is not appealing.
  • I would also agree that on the dynmap, it does not fit in and is not appealing over existing builds on the surface. Personally, I never cared much for builds that floated high up in the air as the isometric view provides no clues as to the height of builds. Overall, I would support taking down the skytram for this reason.

Hope this helps

I say if it isn't being used, remove it. Then again, I prefer that builds that are not being used or enjoyed by individuals/the server population as a whole be removed to make way for other projects/not leave unoccupied clutter all over the map... :cough Aquadome I still haven't finished cough:

If it stays, I'm ok with that as well. :)

So it seems, with the vote, that I will definitely be removing the skytram sometime in the next couple months. (Getting busy irl shortly)

If you are one of the people who use it to get to and from home, I will be happy to provide underground rail lines from the same lift sign post that currently accesses the skytram to a couple destinations (examples: sky5 and north leoville). Please Private message me via the forum messaging system with your preferred station and I will do what I can to address these routes.

Thanks for your input everyone.
