Re: Land for new players
I would be happy to build a skytram station and tracks from the center of spawn to the citadel and beyond to any number of new player build zones. However since many new players are less than respectful toward the blocks around them either from simple newness or a desire to grief, the tracks and stations should be regioned completely. So approval to build inside leoville in addition to regioning the tracks will require significant moderator help and deliberation. From experience, I doubt that the necessary help will be available, especially considering that I was recently reqired to remove all the region protection that had been established for all the rail projects I had done so far. With the ability for griefers to easily destroy the newbie rail line and cause 200 block death falls, I think a ground solution is better for now.

thats a good point timber. would a monorail type thing work? something that is not as high up as the sky rail but not on ground floor so people can see the buildings that they are passing. also would putting a glass block that riders go through at stations work to prevent people from walking/griefing rails? the verge's old server did this and i think it worked for the most part. this way you would only have to region the stops

Re: Land for new players
I think this idea is excellent.
I got the message on my first day not to build in the city, but to go to the wilderness and build there, but it took me three attempts to go naked and weaponless far enough on foot to survive the mobs and not starve and find a place. If it hadn't been for a free wheat patch (I did replant, and thanks to the anonymous person who saved my life) I wouldn't have made it. And I wasn't a total Noob!! I had at least played on singleplayer before coming to this server!
Definitely give a nudge towards the guides on the forum, and the live map, with labelled sticky posts for How To Survive, directed at the inexperienced. Farms along the way where they can eat would be important, with instructions how to replant, if necessary and a crafting table and furnace, and how to make the food.
I really praise the idea of anything that can stop the all-too-frequent begging in the chat, and the cries of 'where can I build a house?'

Home, where my thought’s escaping
Home, where my music’s playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

A lot of "beam walking" involved in making them.

Re: Land for new players
the thing i like about the skytram is that the render distance is so far its hard to notice and doesnt mess with the view.
i am not sure how deadly that monorail would be for falls but if its deadly enough at the height youre thinking of..
what am i thinking, a good design will make it look good no matter how low it is (as long as its not going to attach to peoples roofs)

"Cakes to Dye for" is BACK . . . [west of main spawn]

Re: Land for new players
The reason that i designed it to be so high is so that for many players, it is basically invisible. For those of us who can see it (like myself) it is white, and really far and small so (in theory) non obtrusive. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, the mods required me to remove all my exploit created regions, of which the vast majority were in existence to protect the rail systems (to protect the players riding them from griefing based death drops and mobs). As regioning is no longer an option without mod support, making the skytram (or any highly elevated rail) as the primary rail access for new players, just seems like asking for trouble. I would stick to ground and underground options for any newbie rail lines.

One potential development, the Vieux Carré District, is coming together. Images can be found here: http://imgur.com/a/ud4IF

Re: Land for new players
I'm testing out Dragon's excellent suggestion and have built 3 starter cabins in Redstone City. Each one has room to add on to it and has the most basic things you'd want in a small base. They are available for free to new players but I ask that they contact me first so that I know how the experiment is going.
Re: Land for new players
I am thinking of setting up new starter booths that will be consistent across the map, provide information and basic supplies real cheap. I'll set the first one up at the Northern Hub and then post an update.
