Flea Market

Postby gregor1942 » 19 Jan 2013, 11:38

I want to say this just to bring it to attention. I think we should destroy or replace the flea market (or lagmart). again just bringing this up as a suggestion.

Not 100% sure, but I don't think the flea market is the problem, a few players have said it's the actual chunk that the flea market is situated on is the actual problem, so even if the flea market was replaced then there would still be lag in that area.

We all know you just want that land close to spawn. Bad news is your not going to be getting it unless you pay rage a good amount of money for the land. Getting land close to spawn is next to impossible now. If you need land I can work out a deal for you but you will be paying rent for it and I will get over see on what you want to build and make sure it falls in with the guide lines of the mirage. Just stop trying to get the flea market it's not going to happen.

Yes, there is something about that chunk or several chunks that is causing the lag. There have been investigations into the issue by Curley and Teh_Rage, and no one can explain it. Maybe tweet @Notch, @jeb_, and @Dinnerbone? :P

there were tests done that included those chucnks with a unmodified worldseed (as that area was in survival before anyone built anything, including the flea market) and the lag issue was still there. they tooka copy and deleted the flea market with world edit. the lag was still there.

even if the flea amrket was replaced, the wa things are now, it would still lag you just as much.

There are tons of chests. Each shop has storage space with lots of chests. I'd get an exact number, but I took my shop there down. I know teh_rage was taking chests down from unused shops and was halting any new shops from being built while he was removing all possible chests to see if that would help.

I believe someone said Rage has removed some of the unused chests from the top of the FM, so these numbers may be off. But when I downloaded the world a few weeks ago, this is what the numbers were:

Torches - 859
Jack-O-Lanterns - 686
Wall Signs - 1115
Chests - 2456

Signs and chests were the big causes of lag in my tests.

Also, the Flea Market is not the only structure with lots of signs and chests. In a small radius around the Flea Market there are a total of 3562 chests and 2165 wall signs.

I blame ToucanMonkey/krazyracer for the lag. His smooth pimpin' interview skills yesterday with Leo were just too much for the server to handle.

i wonder if offsite chests would reduce lag (if the flea market was replaced with a shopping area, im not trying to fix the market at this point), offiste chests that were not all the shops in one small area

That's a great idea, Abigail! Maybe the area could be converted to this concept?

for me it involves and ender chest at both points and lots of /home /suicide to set up. but where i have my main storage there is not 2000 chests all in one area. and if every store owner sets it up in their main house the store chests will be all over the server. this makes setting up a franchise of stores much easier. since i can link all my brown dye signs to one chest in one location

yesderday there was a lag test in creative with hundreds of chests in the area, the lag was signigificant and because i was not directly involved i dont remember all the details. it is too much to remove signshop, too many people find it too useful. but haveing all 40 store chests in a single alrge building is alot to ask of anyone who wants to enter the area

pro-tip sign shop works across nether-the end-survival. (but not multiverse, so no linked signs between survival and resource world, but resource outworld to resource nether does, though youd have to relink every week or so).

so decentralizing the location of those chests would help everyone

If there's a better Bukkit plugin for buying/selling that's maintained and updated in a timely manner, please suggest it. Don't be afraid to suggest a plugin simply because we use a different one that provides the same function. If there's something better, Curley and the mods can take a look and see if it will work for us.
