"The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
I think there is a slime chunk somewhere in the Aquadome! I decided to stop by to see how things were going (nice job by the way), and saw a bunch of slimes hopping around! It is huge... so there's not a terribly bad chance of one of the chunks being a slime chunk.

If you guys are planning on having arena battles, you ought to find out where that chunk is and corral those slimes so you can have npc combatants.

I saw this today as I was stopping by... didn't say anything though because there was already a sign telling the person to take the building down. What is a char farm anyway?

When it rains, it pours... Lots of offline problems this week (credit card stolen, major conference for the new employer, yadda yadda). I'm going to try to hop on and help out for a few hours this weekend. Again, I apologize for the delay on my part.

Please do not work on the Aquadome until I have finished my measurements. Something appears to be off... :/

It's hard to spot the problem, but you might be able to see it. The problem was that I assumed the original designer of the coliseum Robrotheram found had actually made it in the shape of a geometric oval.
They did not.
Suffice to say, we're going to have to expand the pit. It needs to go 3 blocks North (towards the bridge) and 6 blocks East (the wall where most of the chests are). I'll start marking everything out tomorrow... :sighs:

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
I am currently marking the foundation for the dome itself on the floor of the pit. The innermost dirt oval will be the arena floor, the middle cobblestone oval will be the stands, and the outermost cobblestone oval will be the exterior wall/columns. I will carve enough of the walls on the floor level so that we know where to expand the pit to. Please do not work on the pit side leveling for the moment as this is now inaccurate.
We will continue to use the coliseum that Robro posted as a model, but keep in mind that it is not geometric and therefore cannot be relied upon for accurate measurements. On top of this, we are only doing one section of stands instead of the two from the original design. Use it for design ideas only.

Iiiiiiit's the Aquadome Update! Yaaaaaayy!!!
Forgive me, been digging and staring at voxel ovals all day.
I've finished laying the outline/foundation for the Aquadome. We will officially need to move the dry dock 3 blocks North and only 4 blocks East. Tonight, I plan to move the chests down to the floor of the Aquadome and inside the outer wall. After this, I'll remove the platform currently holding them and then I'll begin gathering sand and moving the dry dock.
The next big phase will be sand gathering and then lowering the innermost oval as close to bedrock as possible (we'll need an even surface at the bottom because the entire area is going to be used in the future for Aquadome management). Be very careful if you start digging here - There's a large amount of lava down there. Also, make sure you wall off any caverns that you expose to prevent mob invasion.

Hmmm what if the mobs carry snacks and beverages of the adult variety?

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Heh Somehow I doubt we'll have a problem there...
I removed the water from the North side, cleared the sand, and lit the North side. I also placed the dirt platform above the ocean for the East side and placed the spare sand in the chests on the floor (signs will note which chests have what). If someone wants to work on that, they're free to. I'll try to get on some time this week to help out.

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
(... Again
)
After laying the foundation the other evening, I think I see why the original designer didn't use symetrical ovals. Asthetically, it's more difficult to make columns look proper when you have a row with only two blocks to work with. My current plan, once we've completely cleared the dry dock plus hollowed out the arena floor, is to build from the inside out in 3 stages: the arena floor, then the stands, and then the exterior. Once we get to the final build stage, we'll need to have a meeting to determine the best course of action to preserve the oval shape and yet still make it appear asthetically pleasing. Despite the fact that no one's going to be seeing much of the exterior (without a resp helmet, it'd be difficult to swim to the bottom of the pit and back up before dying), I don't want to just slap it together.
I'll try to get on again tonight. I'm clearing space at my parents's so that I can actually use my main PC (I've been connecting using my old MacBook sporatically) and get on Mumble again. I should be able to get most of the East side cleared this weekend and then we can go back to leveling the sides as previously planned. I'll post a revised schedule once we get that done. Suffice to say, I don't think it'll get finished this month but I think we might be able to reach completion some time in April barring any other unforeseen issues.

My monitor did not survive the move. Neither did my Drobo. Not in the mood to Minecraft.
