One pic of Stalker Vantes staring at me through my kitchen window + a major screenshot dump from the dry dock.
If we keep this pace up, we should be done in a week or two!

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
LOL Abigail - She is correct, however. If you have feather falling boots, you may wish to wear them. Also, again, please light your work areas appropriately before leaving and seal off any caves you encounter. Mobs will spawn and usually it's more than one or two if you leave your work area untouched and unlit for an extended period of time. Make sure any torches you use are NOT placed on the dry dock wall. That entire wall is going to be moved out in Phase 3 (see below) and it's a waste of resources. Thanks!
Quick clarification - The initial clearing will be done within the next 2 weeks. The project will not be completed for some time.
I'm going to post a tentative work schedule based on progress so far. Since I am actively looking for a new job, my ability to be involved in the build might be subject to change with little-to-no notice. I'll do my best to provide advance warning if I'll be gone for an extended period.
Tentative Work Schedule:
Phase 1: Prelimanary Dry Dock Construction and Excavation
Status: In-Progress
Estimated Completion: 2/12/13
Phase 2: Building Supply Collection
Status: Planning
Estimated Completion: 2/17/13
Phase 3: Dry Dock Final Touches
Status: Planning
Estimated Completion: 2/24/13
Phase 4: Coliseum Construction
Status: Planning
Estimated Completion: 3/10/13
Phase 5: Dry Dock Flooding and Final Testing
Status: Pending Completion of Phase 4
Estimated Completion: 3/17/13
Phase 6: Grand Opening
Status: Pending Completion of Previous Phases
Estimated Completion: 3/17/13
As you can see, I'm planning on a grand opening date of St. Patrick's Day. In the coming weeks, we'll be able to modify the schedule and we may be done well before this date.
Phase 2 will be coming soon. We need to begin gathering at least 4 double chests of Sand in the next few weeks. This sand will be used in Phase 3 to resurface the floor of the dry dock in addition to creating a terraced appearance for the dry dock on the ocean floor. Once completed, all 4 walls of the pit the Aquadome will sit in will appear similar to this:
|
| |
| | |
| | | |
| | | | |________
| = 6 Blocks of Sand
_ = Aquadome Foundation
(Hopefully this translates well into other browsers)

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Forgot a few things:
- Thank you again to everyone working on the dry dock (Abigail, Greg, Sam, and anyone else I'm missing).
- Phase 3 will also involve dropping the arena floor as close to bedrock as possible while maintaining an even, flat floor. I will outline the oval on the dry dock floor once we're done resurfacing and we'll then have to carefully lower that section as close to Y=0 as possible. This will allow us to have firework shows in the Aquadome without hitting the dome in addition to providing areas to store livestock, supplies, etc.
EDIT: Also, thank you to D.O.T. and Robrotheram for building an exchange that will eventually serve as the main Aquadome entrance. It is at the intersections of the East Highway, the East Rail Line, and a road that leads to the north. It is currently visible slightly north of the Aquadome dry dock on the Dynamap.

hmmmm so why not cut down on sand and do some steps with stone or something then put sand on top of it?

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Not sure what you mean, Goob. If you mean for the competition floor, that is what I plan to do. When we do a fireworks show, we'll cut a hole in the center of the 2 block deep floor (one block sand, one block cobble/dirt/whatever) and a player underneath the floor will launch fireworks. The highest a firework will go is about 57 blocks which, if the player was close to bedrock, would mean that the firework would just reach the top of the glass dome once the arena is completed because it will be at Y=62.
I plan these things out, son!
(I actually do -- I've got this thing precisely measured out.)
If you mean the walls of the pit leading down to the Aquadome, again that is my plan. I've actually made a small demonstration on the southwest corner of the dry dock if anyone cares to see. All I did was add a single layer of sand to make it appear as if it had sunk into the ocean floor.

Ah, also, what about bedrock fog and stuff like that? are you just going to put the bottom layer where it starts or just have a manual o how to turn that off?

And of course you're in there, Greg. I am trying to get screenshots of players at work. I will also probably have 1 group shot of everyone who worked on the build when we're done.

What about it? The spectators will be sitting at about Y=30 and higher so it wouldn't affect them. The only player w/fog would be the person launching in the hole and whoever did that would be professional enough to know what they were launching with or without seeing it.

Ah I guess navigating bedrock fog's gotta be easier than other kinds of fogs

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Goob's post got me thinking last night, so I disabled OptiFine to see how the build looked in the vanilla client.
I see what he means about void fog. :/ It's not horrible at Y=20, but it may be an issue. Are there any Bukkit flags to disable fog in an area? If not, the only other option I can think of would be to have the Aquadome roof sticking out of the water or to raise the floor up to Y=27 and then reduce the height of the arena. Thoughts?
Sorry for this construction oversight. Completely my fault... :/

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
ok, there s ahigh rise near my house in hyrule that has torches around the lift sign in the bottom level. near that there is no void fog and i can see all the way to the other wall. i enter the area and the void fog immediately comes into play. i can go back there and get cooords if you want to check it out, but the point is there is no fog in a particular spot even though the basement level is on the bedrock.
ive noticed the building since i entered hyrule in december, i dont know whose it is and i have only looked at it once or twice to see what it looked like up close (you can see it from the skytram entering the area) but i believe (i will check this again when i get the coords) that there is a vanilla cause to cancel the fog right around the lift sign

If the area is exposed to direct sunlight, the void fog disappears. We could have the top of the dome sticking out of the water and that might save us the hassle of raising the floor.
