"The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Several of us have been discussing building a multi-purpose arena for some time, but no one seems to have taken the initiative to actually break groud on this project. I'd like to begin gathering a small group of players to discuss and eventually design and build such an arena somewhere near Leoville. We would need at least a few "master craftsmen", players who are known for their ability to design/decorate, but we would also need regular builders/suppliers who could do the grunt-work of clearing land, building the basic structure, and supplying raw materials as needed.
Does this project interest any of you? If so, respond to this thread with a good day/time you can meet in Mumble to discuss this. Please remember to mention your time zone for a frame of reference. Also, if you do not have a microphone you may still participate - Mumble allows voice and text chat at the same time.

Re: Multi-Purpose Arena Commission Proposal
basic builder and minor(minor) supplier. I am not one of the crazy designers and castle hyrule is going so fast i would like to look into other things to do when i'm not working on that
EST, mic and mumble
some kind of area with stands around it where the centre area can be repurpsed by the day or week. possibly big enough to have a couple of events at once set-up. though for mumble sanity only one event running at a time. (kind of like the olympics, where the track field is frickin huge but only one event is watched at a time, so we can chain events together in one day)

Re: Multi-Purpose Arena Commission Proposal
Yes, that's exactly what I'm thinking. I'd like to have a field of play large enough to setup a small O-ring pig race, but not compete directly with Goob's pig track (think NASCAR, the arena, vs. Grand Prix, Goob's track). We could even cross-promote with other event areas. Qualifying races for Goob's Grand Prix could be held at the arena, vantes and Toucan's Parkour Course could be used for training, etc.

Yes, but P6 was too far away. Personally, I would like to use that underwater construction experience on this project and I have a couple of prospective sites significantly closer to spawn in-mind. I'll be on Mumble tonight and we can go into more preliminary details then.

I've also been thinking about building an arena for some time now. I would love to be involved. Got some ideas for design. PST for me. Evenings are the best but could do afternoons as well.

Re: Multi-Purpose Arena Commission Proposal
We had our first meeting last night and actually began breaking ground (or would it be ocean?). On the dynamic map, follow the East Highway out of Leoville out into the ocean. When you get to the intersection with the roadway going north just before the suspension bridge, the worksite will is visible due south in the ocean.
A few details:
- The current design calls for a total footprint of 126 blocks long by 90 blocks wide by 35 blocks tall.
- The final 9 blocks are for a dome which will cap the arena, preventing water intrusion.
- A 128x92x50 dry dock is currently being constructed at the location mentioned above.
- Once the dry dock is complete, we will be digging to Y=20, which will be the foundation for the arena.
- The design is based on a modified Roman Colisseum Robrotheram found online.
- The final construction will be mostly a variety of sandstone with other blocks used as accents/decor.
- The current proposed name is "The Aquadome".
- Once completed, The Aquadome will be maintained by a group similar to SGS or DOT.
- Yes, I'm involved in this, so gambling will play a roll in some part.
As of last night, we have a decent pit cleared but we have a long way to go. We have drawn 4 lines total that mark the entire 128-block length of the dry dock in addition to 2 lines marking the 92-block width. If you wish to help throughout the day today, we mainly need TONS (or, in Robro-speak, TONNES :p ) of sand. Not sandstone -- Sand. We need to fill in the entire 128x92x50 area and remove all of the water so that our workers can safely build. A pit has already begun to form which should give you an idea of what we're looking for. If you feel comfortable assisting with the pit itself, please bring as much sand as you can to the area and start building up the inner wall next to the pit (fill on the ocean side - do not fill in the pit
). If you aren't comfortable doing this but want to donate supplies, please bring what you wish to donate along with a chest to contain it to this area and deposit it on the pit floor, unlocked. We do not have donate signs up at the moment.
More details and preliminary screenshots will be posted here soon!

OH! Don't forget to light anything you do build with torches to prevent mobs from spawning! We need a bl (block light level) of 8 or more. Thanks!

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
It took approximately 20 hours (including 15.5 hours yesterday split between myself, Sam, Goob, and Andrew) to get to this point, but we have the first 64x92x50 section of ocean cleared and leveled to Y=50! I took a few screenshots of the process and posted them below:

Right now, we need to collect more sand to finish up the dry dock. After that, we will have to lower the floor of the dry dock 30 blocks to Y=20. Yes, it'll be a lot of work, but this is going to look awesome when we're done! Thanks for all of your assistance thus far!

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Update:
- We should have enough sand for now.
- There are several holes in the ocean floor leading to underground caverns - be careful!
One of the nearby property owners logged on yesterday and, not knowing about the project, was understandably upset by the massive dry dock next to his lovely view. Since this project will take a while, I think I'm going to do one of the final steps first and cover the top of the dry dock with dirt one block below sea level. After this, I will place water on top of it so, from a distance, you cannot see much of the construction. I will then place a lift sign on a single-block "island" to handle entry to the build site. This should mitigate some of the property owners's concerns AND let us do a much more fancy "big reveal" at a later date.

The ocean reclamation is complete! There are lift signs on all four corners of the dry dock and we are beginning to lower the floor to Y=20. If you decide to work on this part of the project, you'll of course be free to keep any mined blocks you find. Please remember to lower the lift signs and drop the torches at their current placement (the lighting needs to remain at the current levels to prevent mob spawning).

Re: "The Aquadome", A Multi-Purpose Arena for All!
Been busy offline the last few days. I will not be on tonight either, but I should be back Friday.
EDIT: If you do dig, please make sure you're lighting the area to +8 or higher OR walling off caves. While I was digging Monday, I had issues with mobs spawning that eventually led to my death, my nice pick and shovel being stolen by a zombie, and then the zombie despawning thus eliminating my ability to reclaim my tools.

Sure! There are lift signs on all four corners of the build site that will let you in. Once inside, just lower wherever you're working as many blocks as you'd like. I'll start a platform with empty chests to dump waste materials (cobble, dirt, etc.) and lift signs to get to it this evening at some point (I have plans immediately after work).
