Horse Speed Test Track

Postby tufkal » 13 Feb 2014, 11:35

Hello everyone!

Many people on the server use horses, and alot of horse sales happen as well. I find people are always curious how fast a horse is. There is a mod/plugin that shows horse stats very nicely, but not everyone is comfortable installing mods. For those people, I did this project.

I have created a horse speed test track in the survival world, just east of spawn at pos1675, neg275. It's right off the NE road out of the main LeoVille spawn area.

This is open for public use, and is very easy to use.

---------------------------------------------------------------
SHORT VERSION

Empty the chest, put a stack of items in the dropper, run the course, the check the chest for results.

---------------------------------------------------------------
MORE DETAILS

Step 1) Make sure it is off. There is a redstone lamp that flickers very fast when the track's timer is running. If that lamp is flashing, press the shutoff button to stop the timer before you start anything.

Step 2) Put a stack of items in the dropper. The dropper puts items into the chest while the timer is running, so you need to put some items into the dropper. 64 arrows, or rotten flesh, or redstone, or anything will work. Just put a bunch of items into the dropper.

Step 2a) Make sure the chest is empty. The chest gets items from the dropper while the timer is running, so you want the chest to be empty so you can see how many items moved.

Step 3) Run the course. Hop on your horse, start at the red starting line, and then run around the track. There are tripwires that turn the machine off and on and certain spots to time how fast your horse is.

Step 4) Check the chest for how many items moved from the hopper while you were on the track. The number of items will show you how fast your horse is. Check the table below, or the signs at the track to see what the numbers mean. Make sure to empty the chest and dropper when you are done.

---------------------------------------------------------------

The timing mechanism is made of several redstone circuits including a monostable circuit (or pulse shortener), and X NOR switch, and a few other types of redstone circuits. It all all underground, you only can see the tripwires, chest, light, and dropper.

The speeds that it measures scale correctly with other ways of measuring horses, including the HorseStats mod. Take a look at the table below for comparisons.

Very nicely done. This is something that I'm pretty sure a lot of us have been meaning to do, but never had the time for. Thank you very much for building this, and so close to spawn. :)
