Leaving Alaska
As some of you may know, I'm currently living in Alaska. Well, the time has come to leave, and I'm looking for advice on things to see on the trip. The plan is take the ferry down to Seattle, drive all the way down to San Diego, swing by the Grand Canyon, and get back to Michigan... eventually.
So, what are the must-see places? How about some out-of-the-way, local flavor?

Theres loads of stuff I can talk to you about in California depending on how long you are planning to spend in each part of the state. Heres a little local flavor: On your way south, stop by TWiT in Petaluma and let me know when. I'll try to be there and show you around
If you want to let me know your California schedule, PM me and I'll come up with some ideas. Sounds like a fun trip.

On your way to the Grand Canyon, you should stop by Tuzigoot National Monument, Montezuma's Well and Montezuma's Castle in AZ. Last I checked, all of them were free to visit. While you're there, stop by the White Mountains and the Mogollon Rim. Very beautiful and worth the trip. (Be careful though. One of the main roads through the Rim is a freaking deathtrap, especially if you're trying to tow something.) All of these are in the northern part of AZ and fairly close to the Canyon.
If you're willing to do a quick Google search, you can find some of the ghost towns that are in the desert. Tombstone's pretty nice
.
And please, stay away from South Phoenix. Take it from somebody with 60% of her family living/lived there, there's nothing worth visiting.
One last thing: I know this probably sounds racist, but if you see Mexicans walking around deep in the desert, run. Chances are that it's the drug cartel, and you do not want to mess with them.

I didn't expect so many replies so quickly. Thanks for the advice, everyone.
I suppose I could have included more about the timeline in the original post: the ferry leaves Haines, AK on Dec 2 and arrives in Bellingham/Seattle on Dec 6. After that... nothing set in stone.

If you have the time, make your way down to New Orleans. They have the best food in the world....as long as you don't ask too many questions about what you're eating.
Seriously, though, the food is great. If you decide to go, let me know how long you plan to be there and I can give you a list of things to do. You want unique experiences, well NOLA is one of the most unique cities in the country.

Re: Leaving Alaska
stop by washington indiana .. small amish community a pretty decent amount of stuff to do
Re: Leaving Alaska
New Orleans was originally on the list, but it was going to add something like 1500 miles to the trip. Unfortunately, it got the axe. If it's any consolation, I've visited before as part of a high school trip.
Indiana, on the other hand, is on the way. I'm adding Washington, IN to the list!

You'd think with all those Amish Heaters they are making they'd be more amicable to cooler weather...
