Entity Limiting

Postby asim0v » 27 May 2012, 19:21

I remember the mods saying that a plugin was now in use to limit entities and reduce lag. That sounds great in theory, but I just ran into two major problems with it today. As many of you know, Sky5 has a public farm. The last time I did a full harvest, I was missing about a stack of wheat and didn't get enough seeds to replant the whole thing, which is definitely out of the ordinary. So I decided the next time to only harvest one side at a time, which I just did. Sure enough, I got the full harvest I was expecting.

I just got done rewiring the pistons on the farm so there are two switches instead of one, a switch for each side. In doing so, I had to move the chests for extra wheat and seeds. The seed chest was one block off, so without thinking I destroyed the other side. The chest spilled its contents out. To my dismay, I could not find the chest. It was not in my inventory, nor was it on the ground. It must have disappeared as part of the entity limit, along with a few seeds. I don't particularly care about one chest and a few seeds, but players could lose some seriously valuable items that way.

If we continue to use this plugin, all players should be aware of the possibility of items just disappearing.

Pity it doesn't work like in City of Heroes where they seem to simply stop rendering the items - they are still there but fade out if you reach a limit

I've also observed this makes survival a bit less interesting (almost no mobs) as well as XP grinding hardly efficient (Spawner seems to be spawning only 1 mob most of the time, and not as often) :( While I like the "less lag" part the take away isn't that great. If we want to keep the entity limit perhaps we need to introduce limits on how much life stock people can have at anytime...

Perhaps they should limit the chickens - whilst they are cute they are EVERYWHERE - no matter where i go in the is a chicken sneaking around a bush or up in the trees.

Plus chickens lay eggs which then tick against the limit.

But some farms are just too packed. 20 - 30 sheep of each color. (Breaks 500 entities, for one farm, whether or not that person is online or not)

Do we know what the entity limit is set to? I mean kicking it up a good amount would help, but it would be just a bandaid. (more people play on the server, more entities would be introduced)

Or perhaps is there a way to verify how long ago a person has been on who runs/owns a farm? if someone's not logged on in a month and has a farm going, it would be reasonable to euthenize the flock. (They are just pixels eating our RAMS!)

Not that I want to make the admins track and slaughter farms now, but if we never police it as people come and go farms will just consume system resources/entity limit when those players don't even play anymore...

There is an "upside" down house in Sky5 where there are a ton of chickens in 1x1 block having water flow on the all the time. Looks cruel
