Minechat and other type apps

Postby Curley » 26 Jul 2013, 12:53

Hey guys, just wanted to give my input on minechat and other apps that allow people to chat in game through a phone or external app by logging your character in an passing the data to it. I'm pushing for them to not be allowed on our server. The goal of the apps is to allow you to chat while not at a full computer, which is nice and all but I've gone through the efforts during every update to configure and maintain our irc link and it works great and uses literally no game resources.. The mine chat apps log in your character and it just sits there using hardware and network resources that hinders other players ability to enjoy the game. Please reference back to all my long winded rants about selfishly afking on the server and how it hurts others. Be courteous to your fellow twitcrafters and use a free irc app on your phones.

Can we not just investigate why the server can't hold more than 15 people without taking a crap on itself instead of having these entity limits, afk kicks, and now app bans?

I mean seriously, there are many servers out there that can hold hundreds of players at a time without lagging, and they are using the same plugins we are with even larger worlds.

I've heard people refer to the server Twit is hosted on as a "beast server" but I'm having a hard time believing that.

Awww yeah that's a shame because you get alot more options with Minechat then you do with IRC mainly the ability to /tell or /msg someone. (as well as the other /commands) but if it really is that big of an issue...

I second the nice things that Goobz mentioned. I have mixed feelings on this one. :(

I know IRC has some sort of /list command but that's about it.

So if minechat has the ability to log you in game, doesn't that mean you spawn in game and can be potentially killed or does it have a way around that?

Nope. You are spawned in. Boxes, killing, etc. are all threats/risks you take.

that alone would be enough for me to not use minechat and i agree with curley that the irc works just fine

You can type /spawn from the app and you are safe.

True. but like I said if IRC had the features that Minechat has I would use it but it doesn't even allow private conversations. and some people like to get on just the chat version when they are dodging their bosses and some folks (like the foreign legion) would like to be able to communicate various information that over all leads to the success of minecraft AND the community as a whole. *bows*

Do remember In your opinions that by being in game you are loading 225 chunks constantly around wherever your player is, along with all the mobs, NPC's, the AI Pathing, lighting and entities. While it is true that yes, in our current state the extra load does not affect our performance noticeably, its my job to err on the side of preventative vs reactive and i feel the benefit over potential issues is not worth it.

In reference to mob and entities limits, remember we're on spigot defaults for the time being just to be safe while we're on unstable pre-beta dev 1.6 builds just in case. Once bukkit releases something beta or god forbid recommended then we can start tweaking things to find a happy balance.
