Server Maintenance [IS NOT] set for 12 PM PST July 9th
The server will be updating to 1.6.2 and will be down around 12 PM PST on July 9th for about 1-2 hours.

Re: Server Maintenance set for 12 PM PST July 9th
We might want to have a Town Hall this weekend to discuss any issues that pop up after the upgrade. I, for one, would like to know if we'll have naturally-occurring horses on the main survival map due to it being generated prior to 1.6. If not, I'd like to know what the mods plan (do without, sell spawn eggs for a large amount, etc.).

In what update do pigs fly? That's when the server will be updated.

Heh, let me put you at ease with an argument you and the majority will most likely disagree with:
Personally, since everything I'm reading seems to say that we will not have natural horses on the survival map, I'd like to see a new survival map started from scratch. We'd be given a month to get certain builds transferred to the new map via WorldEdit with mods assistance. One of our builds, regardless of size, would be moved for free - Think the Citadel, the Aquadome, SGS Tower, D.O.T. Central Station, etc. The rest would cost 1000 coins per 1000 blocks moved*. Players would then be allowed to transfer their inventory to the new map for a one month grace period before the old map would be archived and no further edits to it allowed. This would give us an updated map full of emeralds, newer trees, new terrain to explore, hopefully more vast oceans, natural horses and donkeys, and also give the mod community a chance to review what did and did not work on this current map. This would allow them to apply those lessons to the new world and hopefully make it a better community for all of us.
I feel this map has been begging for a reset for a while now and 1.6 might just be the excuse we need. Yes it will mean that we'll have to rebuild, but many of us have been complaining about having nothing to do for some time now. This would definitely give us something to do.
I have deployed the umbrella, please feel free to throw your produce in my general direction now.
* Keeping in mind that "1000 blocks moved" means cubed. So, a house that is 10 blocks tall, 10 blocks long, and 10 blocks wide would cost 1000 coins to move in this scenario.

I agree, so long as I can take my inventory & money.
I did just finish my railway down at the bedrock, but I can always rebuild. It would give me a chance to get some villagers too.
I'm okay with a reset.

I edited my previous post to mention money and item transfers as you were replying.

Re: Server Maintenance set for 12 PM PST July 9th
... That I agreed with in principle when it was proposed previously, if you recall.
EDIT: Emeralds, in addition to dwindling glowstone supplies in the survival nether, forced the mods into creating a resource world. Unless we're going to be allowed to transfer mobs from resource to survival, which I've been told can be allowed but I don't know the veracity of this, they're going to have to come up with a spawn egg solution. Unless the mods are just going to become glorified donkey and horse dispensers, there will have to be some sort of lottery or shop system created to purchase these mobs. That will then create an unfair advantage for the players such as myself who have the money to purchase multiple entries into a lottery/multiple spawn eggs.
The other alternative, of course, is to simply say "No Horses/Donkeys/Mules". I don't think many would be happy about that and I suspect we'd lose some players over it.
It's nice that this map has been around for so long, but it also feels at times like this map has been around for *sooooo long*... Fatigue has set in to an extent.

TSC, I think it's best we keep this discussion here where everyone can see it registered or no.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be a long shot, just that it's what I'd prefer to see happen personally. If you gave everyone 2 full months to transfer over and get settled, I think most of us would go willingly. There will always be a few (I won't name names) who will fight it either way, but if we could come up with an agreement that 2/3 to 3/4 of the population agrees with I don't see why we couldn't keep the original survival map as a sort of TWiTCraft Museum (and of course tie it into the existing TWiTCraft Museum building east of spawn -- Maybe even make that building as a portal back to the old map).

Re: Server Maintenance set for 12 PM PST July 9th
A map reset, the way PA describes, would be a very good thing to help reinvest old players and draw and keep newer ones. Sounds like a lot of work for the mods but I know we need something new.
I have two concerns with a reset. One is community based. The other is personal.
Community: A lot of players (cough ...cough... Robro) including myself spent an absolutely astronomical amount of time on infrastructure: Roads, Robro's DoT work, Dragon's Netherroad, My Skytram and airfield rails, Nether rail systems, etc. I know that I, personally, would be unwilling to reinvest that time and effort in infrastructure on a new map, and can only imagine that other players may feel the same. Would that mean we leave infrastructure to the new players (especially in summer when they are mostly kids)? I wouldn't necessarily trust that as a good option.
Personal: I logged in on Day 1 of when Chad told me the server would go public so I could get a plot close to spawn. I also created my region before the current region size restrictions were in place and therefore have been allowed to grandfather in a rather oversized region. Would I be forced to give up the citadel's large region and proximity to spawn with the reset? If I lost either of these, Id probably just stop playing all together, not out of any animosity or ragequit, but it would just be so disheartening every time I logged in.
Thanks.

Re: Server Maintenance set for 12 PM PST July 9th
This is 100% how I would personally do it if I were handling it all by myself. It doesn't reflect the opinions of the mods, most of the community, or even Drunk Poster.
Community: With the reset, I would hope that players would be encouraged to build closer to spawn and to NOT build massive unpopulated cities. It's one thing to build a large castle 2000+ blocks from spawn in the middle of a jungle for your own personal amusement and quite another to build an entire city and expect it to have a road/rail all the way out to it. As I've complained again and again, most of the population is decentralized with a few people building a town here, a few there, all over the place. I'd rather have one "core" area with reasonably-priced (200 coins for a small lot with prices increasing with size of the lot), one-time payment lots zoned for residential, another for businesses (think: the current Leoville lots with rent + an initial payment), close to spawn and then on the outskirts of this area have the larger builds (Citadel, Aquadome, etc.). If you want a massive home outside of Neo Leo, knock yourself out. If you want infrastructure out to it, you would need to redo it. Skyrail and roads are usually more resource-consuming + a bit of time. The current D.O.T. rail, especially the underground parts, is a lot more time-consuming AND resource-consuming (think of the tools involved). Yes, it would suck to have to redo that, but if we encourage building closer to the Neo Leo core you wouldn't have rails and roads going all over the place as we do now.
Personal: Hence the reason I said "one build" irregardless of size.
Ideally, you would select the Citadel as your one free transfer and if you had a house elsewhere select that as your second, paid transfer.
Yes, this would create a ton of initial setup. I'll type more on this later. I need to go now before my barber closes @ 6pm.

Re: Server Maintenance set for 12 PM PST July 9th
Locking this thread, the server is not updating at 12pm PST today. It is 2 pm PST and I am continually being asked in TWiTCraft why the server isn't updated to 1.6 since it is now past 12pm PST.
TSC, going forward please do not post forum threads with semi-official sounding titles like, "Server Maintenance set for 12 PM PST July 9th".
It is causing confusion and unwarranted disappointment for players expecting an update at exactly 12pm PST.
There is an interesting conversation about a new survival map that I hope continues but in a thread more aptly titled.
Thanks,
Vantes
