Locking Chests not working with Hoppers ... Explained

Postby Timberwolf1777 » 18 Apr 2013, 21:27

So, as you all may have noticed, hoppers cant be locked and chests can. Up until recently, hoppers could still pour contents into locked chests. Not anymore.

This was changed due to greifers (on other servers) being able to place hoppers under a locked chest and drain its contents while still locked. Because of this issue, the plugin that deals with locking a chest will now prevent hoppers from interacting with chests in ANY way and it will stay this way for the forseeable future.

What this means to you:
If you want to have automated hopper/chest systems that are also locked, they MUST be built inside your region. That is the only way right now to protect your chest contents and have a functional interaction. Remember that both hoppers and chests placed in a region cannot be opened by non owners and non members of that region while still remaining unlocked.

So, I've been doing some reading on LWC. In the most current version 4.3.2 beta3 ( not sure what we are running) the change log talks about a restriction on "placing" an hopper next to a protected chest which you don't own. Nothing about being able to place it and not letting it place/remove items from said chest. This seems like a much more reasonable solution than just disallowing the function of the hopper/dropper blocks. If we can restrict a player from placing a hopper next to a chest which that player does to own, this would remove the stealing issue frm the conversation and allow the owner of that chest to continue to use the abilities of a connected hopper/dropper.

I also gathered from reading through the config files that you can also set the ability to lock hoppers and droppers themselves. This would be great if we could get that turned on.

Would love to here from a mod/curley if I have miss interpreted the abilities of LWC or if these things I mentioned can be implemented.

So Timber and I did some tests.. It does appear that a player can NOT place a hopper next to a locked chest which that player does not own. But the owner CAN place it next to the chest. This leads me to believe that we just don't have something set correctly, or it is a bug in the plugin. Seems pretty useless for the owner to be able to place the hopper and not use it.

Another thought is that it may work if all items in the chain were locked by the owner.. so chests and hoppers.

We have the newest dev build of lwc. Since its still not fully updated to 1.5 I've been keeping an eye on it. Wasn't aware of the hoppers not working in the locked chests, it's either a bug or a config, ill dig into it during my next fiddle session.

So, since we are now up to 1.6, can this item get looked at? It still appears to be the same issue as before. I would REALLY love if we could get locks on hoppers (i think it is a config thing) and interaction between locked hoppers and locked chests.

Thanks!!

They are working. Just tested it out. LWC defaults protected chests to disallow hopper access, but you can turn it on with /chopper on. Players other than the owner cannot place hoppers that would access the chest, even if hopper access is enabled. Now hoppers do not appear to be lockable, so make sure you have them in a region with chest-access set to deny since WorldGuard treats hoppers like chests.

This makes me SO happy!! now.. what are the chances we can get hoppers added to the lockable block list? And for that matter, how about furnaces and brewing stands?

You've been able to lock furnaces for ages. As for brewing stands, wasn't aware that LWC had added that ability. It's not enabled on TWiTCraft currently, but I just tweeted Curley and asked if he could enable it.

Added the config a few days back. Won't take effect till the next restart. Someone tweet me late at night to remind me to reboot it when the population is low.

How late? I wake up at 11:30pm CDT, but the server population doesn't die down until later than that.
