Sounds like something's wrong with your client. Are you using a mod loader or just vanilla client? I'd try opening just the vanilla EXE if you are using something. You might have to delete your .minecraft folder from AppData + the client EXE and redownload.

Are you using MagicLauncher or another third-party launcher? I had all sorts of issues with MagicLauncher since the 1.5 update, to the point where I've abandoned it until there is an update.

Did you try what I mentioned? You probably need to completely reinstall your client. You'll need to go into your user profile (In Windows Vista/7 - C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\) and delete the ".minecraft" folder. Then you'll need to delete your Minecraft.exe file. Go to www.minecraft.net, redownload the file, and try again.

Java uninstall/reinstall time. Add/Remove Programs, remove all Java clients, reinstall after rebooting.
