Auctions for Permabanned Players Possesions?
Pitching a random idea I had a few nights ago: instead of destroying the items of a perma-banned player, why not auction them out? The money going into the auction could be destroyed like the rent for Leoville plots.
I honestly don't have any of the details worked out, just putting the idea out there.

Great idea, as long as they didn't cheat to get the items/stuff. Blind auction, storage unit style? Like, (Name) items going up for auction. (x) amount of different item types, (x) stacks, (x) estimated usage/value. Then players send a PM to the user in charge with their bid amount and it has to be cash in account, no "running to the farm atm" if you win. Just my 2cp.

The mods have talked about this idea before. It would be fine except for 1 problem. The main problem is anyone who had anything of worth and then got banned was banned mainly for Xraying. It would be wrong (IMO) to auction off items that were obtained in a cheaty method. It would almost promote Xraying in some ways if you had an alt account. However, if we did some sort of overall package (like what jaythedogg said), consisting of many people's stuff, it may actually be worth something once all of the various items have been put into 1 "unit".

I think the idea overall is a good one. Would the banned player's real estate be up for auction as well? Example: Player X is banned but he had a house in West Leoville. Would that house "go on the market" as well?
As for promoting use of x-raying, ehhhhh I don't think it does. Sure a player might see these items they won at auction and think "Wow cheating got this player a bunch of stuff", but that thought would be followed with a "... And got them banned forever." I think the common knowledge that cheating will earn you a permaban deters players enough. Maybe clearly reiterate it before each auction just to get the point across, but that should be enough.
Sidenote: jay, your avatar creeps me out. Kudos.

I tend to agree with ipodparf on this one if only for this example:

Flooding the market with that many diamonds (and any other X-ray found ores) via auction would surely have a large impact on shop pricing. and probably wouldnt be very fair to a vast number of shop owners.

That's my face by the way.
Edit: To be fair, I'm only half that creepy. I made a video using Adobe After Effects, a "Demon Face Morph" and that is a still grab from it. Here is the original:

It's lame compared to the really good ones, like this:

Xray, I hadn't even thought of that. I agree completely with Ipod and Timber, but enchanted tools, armor and books should be safe. If the tools and armor made with the diamonds aren't acceptable, the books at least should be fine. Then again... books could be found in dungeons. If nothing else, simple stuff like wood, wheat, books, leather, etc. should be fine. If there are any other flaws in my not-so-worked-out plan, please mention it.

Eh a short-term fluctuation. In the long run, it would balance itself out. However, if I were to bid on items from an auction, I can tell you that it wouldn't hit the market at all. Would it stop me from buying? Eh, somewhat. Most of what I'm buying now, however, are enchanted items I'm too lazy to grind and make myself.

I think, even with X-ray goods (which are a thing of the past with proper settings in Spigot) that the auctions would be a great idea. It would take money out of the market & if shop owner(s) win auctions, then the market will flood with inexpensive goods causing an upsurge in building & encourage trade while driving prices down in individual stores, again, encouraging more trade.
