Item Frames Cause Lag

Postby VanteS » 24 Dec 2012, 00:45

Just an FYI, placing a lot of item frames in a small area will cause a lot of lag.

I think it's well known that lots of entities in a small area cause lag, thus we have discouraged large animal farms near spawn. With that in mind I'd like to deter the use of item frames near spawn. :(

In Flatland at X: -304 and Z: 307, I placed 325 item frames in a 19x19 area and saw a dramatic drop in my FPS.

When looking away from the item frames my FPS was 58, when looking towards the item frames my FPS dropped to 17.

In the overworld I noticed a lot of new item frames in the Flea Market area.

Item frames have a long render distance so when standing at the Microsoft Store, the enchanting tower north of spawn or the TWiTCraft Museum site and looking towards Flea Market and Diocias new building you'll notice a significant drop in framerate. When looking in the opposite direction, FPS will rise back to normal.

Unfortunately this area has a lot of item frames, adding to the already debilitating Flea Market lag.

Lets curb the use of item frames near spawn and strive toward a lag free tomorrow!

Thank you,

Vantes

it sounds like limiting the number of item frames used in an area could have a significant decrease in the flea market lag and leave the flea market stores and signs as they are, otherwise.

I feel like I need to put my nerd hat on here and point out that while lag can mean frame rates, the far more traditional and common use is latency, which usually has little to do with frame rates. Latency is a networking issue. Low frame rates are a local hardware issue.

As a general rule, item frames should be discouraged from use anyway. There is no way to lock them (that I am aware of) short of region protection, which means people can just come by and pop them off and take the item if there isn't region protection. It would be great if lwc was updated to include item frames and ender chests. Sure, I know ender chests just allow access to the individual player's ender chest, but people can still steal them, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Item frames can easily be disabled. Everyone did when they first came out cause they crashed the game in the dev builds. Them causing server side and client side slow down is a known issue but it was marked as only when used in excess so I figured we'd leave them in the game cause people were really looking forward to them. At this point just play with gentlemans rules and limit your own usage while warning players that don't read this to do the same if you notice. If they become a real issue I can block them.
