As one of the people who rebuilt the rail system on the old map, He is my thoughts:

First sounds like a cool plan I would suggest that you take a look at the old map for how the DOT rail system looked like. Simply it was 2 rail lines (one up one down) for every route with fences lining the edge with torches keeping the whole line well lit.

My concerns with it are one what is your plan for stations between the towns, too many the line becomes slow, Also are you going for a underground line, Overground line or Skytram,

My final thought was that the rail system on the last server was useful until horses came along. At which point I noticed that the usage of the rail system decreases.

Oh you are alot of iron the old rail system needed around 120 stacks of iron to complete.

Suggestion:

NO RAILS.

Please see my response to the Mesa Rail System here for my reasoning behind not wanting to recreate a rail system in general. In short, a combination of well-built roads and horses make permanent railways obsolete, a waste of time and resources, and a blight upon the map. Please, please, PLEASE do not build a permanent rail system. A temp one to move villagers closer to you? OK. Permanent? To quote 2 year-old PA, "NO-K!"

I agree that over ground rails can spoil the view and make it difficult for people who want to make their homes somewhere only to find, hey look a rail right where I want my house. However, there is nothing wrong with underground rails.

Sure horses are fast but some people enjoy making and using railways, and that's part of the game too.

As to it getting in the way of mining, the survival map is where we build. I for one love to build underground and would hate to be told that I shouldn't as it gets in the way of mining when there is an entire resource world just waiting to be dug up.

It sounds like a fun project and I hope you have a great time with it!
