Griefer Attack Aftermath
I understand that there was a "Griefer Attack" on TWiTCraft today and mods were brought in to clean up the mess. I thank all the Mods for their service as I really do love and enjoy the TWiTCraft Server.
A regular player, BrettOgden, was brought in by a mod to serve as a "mod" to talk to griefers in chat while the real mods would serve bans.
I understand that mods were overwhelmed and needed the extra help because bans were coming fast and furious.
Instead of just changing Brett's name in chat to Mod Orange wouldn't the real solution be to have more mods?
Its been several hours after the attack yet Brett's name in chat continues to be mod orange confusing many long time TWiTCraft players.
I assume he continues to appear as a mod because attacks may continue and his orange name may thwart any further attacks.
This wouldn't be necessary if mods played more often or there were more mods.
I have no ill will towards Brett, we are friends on TWiTCraft and he has helped me on many occasions. He informed me this was all thought out and implemented by the mods and Brett was just doing his best to be of help to the Server, I applaud him for that.
Curley, instead of allowing fake mods, why not promote trusted players as mods, players that actually play often? Also, promoting Brett's account to Mod Orange sets a bad precedent, his account has been banned twice on TWiTCraft.

(Removed parting rage message -V)
EDIT
Brett admitted to xraying for over a week and has been permabanned:

Re: Griefer Attack Aftermath
I don't know what happened to "promote" brett but it sends a bad message to promote someone that has had multiple rule violations.
I agree with Vantes.

Re: Griefer Attack Aftermath
Couple misunderstandings here. The "griefer attack" was nothing more than what looks to be some kids from a group pointing their user base at us to see if they could rustle some jimmies. This has happened before and will happen again as it does with any server of any size. All of the protections I have in place held strong and things were easily fixed with a kick/ban and a logblock rollback (hell some even left cause they couldn't figure out the dreaded /rules password boss ^_^)
Even if no mod was online the whole day we would have had no problem. With a player base our size our logblock sql holds about 10 days worth of data and i think even more. I have no need or desire for more mods nor do see any benefit in adding further trees to the permissions nodes. I'm happy with what we have and it has been effective.
This has been stated in other places much better than I will attempt to recap here but I hold true to the policy that "griefers" are genuinely only attempting to get a rise out of people on the server, They don't care about the builds or the damage or whatever, they just want a response, it's why they do what they do. So, and I've discussed this many times with the mods, our policy is to not give them that satisfaction. We don't run around screaming about the world falling and we don't antagonize. We simply state that they broke the rules and ban. This make them bored sooner than any other method.
What was nice is that today when this happen we had t2t2 around who gladly went around and banned/rollbacked as needed to de-incentivise the attempts at griefing. I just so happened to be at a worksite today that did not have a minecraft capable computer so I was enjoying the show via the console and chatting with t2. Since this flow of players seemed to go on longer than we had experienced before we came up with an idea. The griefers kept asking to speak to someone so we had t2 invisible following them and asked brett to talk with any of the willing griefers and try to get more info from where they were coming from. The changing of Brett's name was purely cosmetic, he was the person online at the time we knew the most and was willing to be our Guinea pig. It wasn't necessary and was intended to be something halfway between trolling the trolls and investigative journalism.
The reason it did not get changed back is solely a misstep on my end. Since this morning I've been out driving and haven't had time to check out the results of what went down till now. Honestly didn't foresee that being a problem in the least but was wrong and apologize for that. His naming color has since been returned to normal.

Re: Griefer Attack Aftermath
Thanks for the clarification Curley, I appreciate it.
Although I still fundamentally believe that more mods are required to properly moderate TWiTCraft, there are only a few mods that play regularly and seem overburdened with mod responsibilities, I will defer my appeal for additional TWiTCraft moderators.

Re: Griefer Attack Aftermath
I was wondering about that myself.. I read the forum and saw that Brett was banned for one day, and then when I log on, he's a friggin mod? Thanks for the explanation.
Re: Griefer Attack Aftermath
tbh the ban he had on record at the moment (Griefing public structures (Eating cake at spawn)) was really minor
