Monthly spawn-region market

I think that for five to seven days from the 1st of every month, the signshop rules should be relaxed for a specific region within a town's spawn radius. Specifically:

  • Each town should have a parcel of park/green belt reserved within the 100 block radius of their spawns
  • Players should be allowed a day (1st of each month?) to set up tiny SignShop stalls in said park in a randomly chosen (or all?) town
  • The resulting market should be allowed to stay for up to four or six days (perhaps with events also?)
  • On the final day, players will have to take down their stalls and restore the park to how it was
  • Maybe have a maximum of three to five signs per stall?

With a temporary market like the above, I'd hope the benefits were to:
  • Allow players to sell off their goods closer to the larger sources of foot traffic
  • Allow players to raise awareness of their builds or larger shops elsewhere
  • Allow the community to come together to help set up and take down stalls
  • Only increase strain in spawn-region lag for a few days per month in a predictable pattern

Make sense and then we don't end up with a bunch of shops that are abandoned or unstocked. I like the aspect of having it rebuilt every month, makes it a challenge to stand out or be different.

So... You want a Market that can be easily packed up, or Flea as it were, since it's technically not 100% legit/because if it were to remain too long it would become a lag zone/eyesore?

Honestly, I'd like to see shops closer to spawn with a low number of signs per shop limit (including Buy, Sell, and Lift signs). Something like 10-15 signs max. If you had 10 shops near each town with 10-15 signs each you're looking at a max of 150 signs total. Not sure if that would still be too many lag-wise, however. You'd also need to have a rule about no chests, which wouldn't be too big of a deal since chests in another area can be linked to signs via redstone.

I'd prefer to just have a shopping district say a few hundred blocks away from spawn. We could add a new portal in the lobby or a rail line to get there.

Players are free to build a shopping district, mall, or whatever for shops just as long as it's 100 blocks from the edge of a city region. I can't promise anything, but we will at least consider adding a portal to the location that becomes the commerce hub.

Yep. I reckon it would be a good compromise between the current rules and the known issues with sign lag. I should clarify my suggestion's intent in that it would have to work in agreement with the mods and rules, not to circumvent them.

I too would like to see permanent shops closer to the spawn. It's a little annoying to run further each time to get something I need from a shop but I can perhaps empathise with the current rules in place.

Although a lobby portal to a shopping district is also a nice (perhaps better) idea, Inert.

honestly the 100 block distance is not that far. repin_JC's store is 100 blocks from the edge of leoville and it is like a 10 second run. so if someone were to in an area, where no one frequents make a shopping center at the edge of that 100 block radius then that would really be good

I've been putting stuff together to build a shopping district / flea market area.


I'm more than willing to build it. Just need an agreeable location.


I was thinking way out in the wilderness with a portal to a nether road, probably somewhere in the desert so we don't have to deal with rain. But, if a closer location suits, I'm definitely not picky.

Any suggestions as to location, size limits, etc?

I support the monthly Fleamarket in a town centre is a good idea, as it will add some variety and activity - to implement I would suggest
- 1 town centre per month (not spawn)
- Advertised with signs in the lobby / other town centre's
- Region set aside that is within the town centre (so there is no temptation to leave bits behind)

As for the commerce hub, also a good idea and Nether Road is a good way to access it. Once again, nice if the mods can setup some signage to help new payers find it.

I am happy with the 100 block exclusion zone around the towns, it seems to be working.

I'm currently working on a "public market" solution near Sci-Fi City. I should allow "beta" access to people in the next few days and open it to the public sometime in the next week.
